ITOCHU offset projects have cost $20-200 million, taken 1-3 years to implement, and ranged from constructing seawater desalinization plants to digital camera and blade server assembly facilities.

Despite the size and diversity of these activities, our Countertrade and Offset (CT/O) unit itself is small – just two professional ITOCHU staff in Tokyo and one consultant in North America. This is because our division assumes a project development and management role, while our operational business units do the actual project implementation.

Our function is to coordinate the multiple parties and issues involved in typical offset projects. These include:

Parties Issues
  • local exporters
  • joint venture partners
  • offset obligors
  • governmental regulatory agencies and ministries
  • financial institutions
  • marketing, sales, and legal departments
  • internal business units
  • intellectual property
  • costing
  • licensing
  • documentation
  • quality control
  • compliance
  • risk assessment
